For five years, billionaire Mark Cuban has focused on reducing costs for generic medications, including chemotherapy agents and antifungal ointments, making them more affordable for American patients. Earlier this year, a new category of medicine arrived at his Dallas facility, signaling a strategic shift.

Among the initial shipments were DNA-inspired molecules synthesized by California chemists designed to correct a rare genetic mutation ravaging a single patient’s neurons. Another batch, developed in collaboration with Dutch researchers, targeted a progressive muscle-wasting disorder affecting adults.

These shipments mark the inaugural test of Cuban’s expanded vision for Cost Plus Drugs, aiming to disrupt the custom rare disease medicine landscape. In an email, Cuban noted, ‘It was an obvious chance for us to help those in that unfortunate situation.’
