The Marlins opened the scoring with single runs in the first two innings, setting the stage for Ryan Gusto’s impressive 5 2⁄3‑inning shutout. His performance powered Miami to a 4‑0 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.
Boston starter Sonny Gray, who entered the game with a 16‑4 record, surrendered two hits in each of the opening frames, but four Red Sox errors amplified the Marlins’ offense.
Offensively, Javier Sanoja went 3‑for‑4 with an RBI and three stolen bases. Otto Lopez contributed a 2‑for‑4 effort, adding two stolen bases and two runs scored, while Heriberto Hernandez finished 2‑for‑4 with an RBI. Their combined efforts helped Miami clinch the series.
Gusto earned his first win of the season, striking out two batters while allowing four hits and three walks. Relief pitchers Victor Vodnik, Janson Junk and Dax Fulton preserved the shutout.

Early in the game, Hernandez’s RBI single past diving shortstop Andruw Monasterio plated Kyle Stowers. Stowers had opened the inning with a leadoff single to right and advanced to third on a throwing error by Boston first baseman Nick Sogard during an attempted 3‑6 double play.
After Gusto stranded the bases loaded in the top of the second, Lopez sparked Miami’s second run with a leadoff hit to left. He stole second after Ceddanne Rafaela’s diving catch on an Owen Caissie liner and scored when catcher Connor Wong’s throw went awry.
Gray kept Boston in the game by stranding two runners in scoring position in consecutive innings, striking out twice before Jarren Duran’s sliding catch near the foul line denied Caissie in the third. He allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings.
In the middle frames, Gusto retired the side in order in both the fourth and fifth innings. Victor Vodnik then helped escape a two‑on, two‑out jam in the sixth by catching Anthony Seigler looking.
Miami added insurance runs in the eighth. Lopez’s single, a stolen base and advancement on another misplay by Wong set up Caissie, who drove the run home on a grounder misplayed by Sogard. Two batters later, Sanoja lined an RBI single up the middle to finish the scoring.
