A fire that ignited in a townhouse in southern Norway and eventually destroyed roughly one hundred homes has been largely contained, fire officials reported on Saturday.
Local media characterized the blaze as the most significant fire in the Nordic region in over a century.
What do we know?
The fire erupted on the outskirts of Drammen, roughly 34 kilometers (21 miles) from Oslo, at about 3:30 p.m. local time (1330 UTC) on Friday, quickly tearing through a line of townhouses.
It subsequently spread rapidly through the surrounding neighborhood and toward nearby forests, driven by strong winds and exceptionally dry conditions, according to officials.
The newspaper Aftenposten reported that evacuation efforts displaced more than 400 residents.
Norway’s public broadcaster NRK reported that firefighters from multiple districts were deployed throughout the night in an effort to contain the blaze.
Local media also noted that several helicopters normally used for forest‑fire suppression were dispatched to the scene.
By Saturday midday, Aftenposten quoted officials who said the fire no longer posed a major threat to residential zones, although crews had not yet brought the forested sections under full control.
Police confirmed that no fatalities occurred, though one firefighter sustained minor injuries and several individuals received treatment for smoke inhalation.
Dagbladet described the aftermath as resembling a war zone, littered with burnt‑out vehicles and reduced homes.
PM describes fire as ‘deeply shocking’
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store expressed his condolences to residents who lost their homes in the fire.
“My thoughts also go out to the fire and rescue crews and volunteers who are now engaged in the demanding firefighting efforts and are doing everything possible to halt the fire’s spread,” he wrote on social media.
Officials noted that while dry conditions likely contributed to the rapid spread, the cause of the initial ignition remains unknown.
