Few shots in golf induce as much anxiety as an open-faced wedge from a tight lie. However, mastering the proper setup and incorporating a simple swing thought can transform this challenging shot into a reliable weapon around the green.

Follow these key techniques from GOLF Top 100 Instructor Debbie Doniger to develop the correct setup and a consistent swing thought that ensures solid contact every time.

Open Stance, Handle High

Start with a narrow stance, shifting more weight onto your lead foot. Open your stance by aligning your feet and body left of the target (for right-handed golfers), then open the clubface to increase loft. Elevate the handle slightly so the clubhead’s toe rests on the ground.

Position the ball just forward of center in your stance. According to Doniger, this adjustment promotes shoulder opening and facilitates the necessary swing plane.

“The setup is fundamental,” she notes, “but understanding the swing concept you’re trying to create is equally important.”

Swing Across the Ball and Maintain Rotation

This is where many golfers falter—by becoming overly cautious.

Confronted with a delicate shot, numerous amateurs reduce their tempo or cease rotating through impact. This results in erratic contact and disappointing outcomes.

Doniger’s recommendation: Swing outward and across the ball while maintaining full rotation of your arms, chest, and torso toward the left of the target.

“It’s essential to commit to rotating through,” she emphasizes.

This element is crucial. While opening the face generates additional loft, sustained rotation is what delivers the clubhead consistently. Focus on rotating—avoid attempts to lift the ball at the last moment.

Execute the Match Strike

Achieving the correct feel for this shot can be challenging. Avoid digging into the turf or sweeping the ball. Instead, Doniger suggests a straightforward swing thought: “Strike the match.”

Visualize the clubhead’s toe grazing the grass as if striking a match during impact. The objective is a shallow, controlled blow that cleanly clips the turf without excessive digging.

While this technique requires practice, the reward is well worth the effort. With proper setup, committed rotation, and a precise strike, you can confidently execute this shot from even the most demanding tight lies.
