Owens made his unexpected comeback during the second night of SummerSlam, securing a victory over Sami Zayn in a four-way match that also featured Finn Balor and Gunther. This win earned him the position of number one contender to CM Punk. The appearance marked his first match in 17 months, following a neck fusion surgery performed last July, and his involvement was kept entirely confidential prior to the event.

During an appearance on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Hardy expressed his enthusiasm for the return and specifically commended the strategic way it was executed.

“It is great to see Kevin back and healthy,” Hardy remarked. “It is wonderful to know he still has that drive to compete and continue his legacy. I am very happy to see him back in action.”

“I thought the surprise element was handled brilliantly,” Hardy continued. “The fact that he wasn’t advertised made the moment feel much more authentic and heightened the emotional impact of his return.”

Owens has previously shared details regarding his grueling recovery process, which included spinal cord damage and the possibility of long-term complications. He received medical clearance in early July and returned to the ring on July 18, exactly one year after his surgery.

Hardy also shared his enthusiasm for the potential upcoming match between Owens and CM Punk.

“Both of them are exceptional promos and masters of storytelling, particularly in how they engage with their opponents. They are both highly intelligent, technically sound wrestlers. There is immense potential in that matchup.”

While nothing has been officially scheduled, Owens is currently positioned as the next challenger following CM Punk’s successful title defense against Cody Rhodes on the first night of SummerSlam.
