Matthew Rhys secured the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his performance in ‘The Beast In Me,’ followed by a win for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for ‘Widow’s Bay.’
While a select group of actors — including Alan Alda, Sally Field, John Goodman, Elisabeth Moss, and Ted Danson — have previously received nominations for two lead acting awards in a single year, Rhys made history by becoming the first to win both.
Backstage, Rhys remarked, “Coming from a small nation, I’m honored to have these opportunities to showcase our talent on the global stage and demonstrate that we can exceed expectations.”
‘The Beast In Me’ centers on a grieving author, portrayed by Claire Danes, who develops an unhealthy fixation on an enigmatic new neighbor under suspicion of murder.
Rhys described the win as a “genuine surprise,” adding, “Thank you for inviting me into the mystery and helping to bring forth the beast — you’re a formidable scene partner, but I’m deeply appreciative of this experience.”
Later that evening, upon accepting the comedy actor award for his role as the mayor in ‘Widow’s Bay,’ Rhys expressed gratitude to his family, friends, and colleagues for their support throughout his career, notably mentioning his parents who “encouraged him to take the stage at a young age”.”
