At the Mexican Grand Prix, 20-year-old Italian driver Kimi Antonelli secured the Formula One world championship with a third-place finish in his Mercedes. Antonelli made history as the youngest-ever world champion, breaking Sebastian Vettel’s previous record of winning the title at age 23 in 2010.
While Antonelli was absent from Thursday’s media day due to illness, he still managed to secure a podium finish. “I am still trying to realize and understand what just happened,” Antonelli reflected, adding that sharing the moment with his family was deeply special. Antonelli is only the second Italian to claim the title, following Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Verstappen claims sixth victory at Mexico City GP
Meanwhile, four-time world champion Max Verstappen celebrated another triumph at the Mexico City Grand Prix, claiming his sixth win of the season. “The ‘Max-ico’ Grand Prix will be a great name to call it,” Verstappen said, expressing his love for the city and its fans.
Lewis Hamilton, who took pole position on Saturday, lost his position while battling for the lead with teammate Charles Leclerc on the fourth lap. “We had the pace to win today, but it wasn’t meant to be and we’ll take it offline and figure out what we can do in the background,” said a visibly irritated Hamilton. Leclerc finished fourth while McLaren’s outgoing world champion Lando Norris came in fifth. Antonelli’s teammate George Russell finished sixth.
Following this weekend’s race, F1 will travel to Brazil before heading to Las Vegas. The final races of the season are scheduled for Qatar and Abu Dhabi, although it remains unclear whether both will go ahead as planned amid ongoing regional instability.
