A federal judge in Alaska dismissed the Trump administration’s bid to postpone certification of election results should the Republican incumbent be defeated because of duplicate candidate names on the ballot, in another pivotal Senate contest.
Leading up to the vote, former President Trump and his administration have repeatedly questioned the legitimacy and security of the election process, even though data indicates that voter fraud is exceedingly uncommon. The Justice Department has opened inquiries and sought to set aside ballots in several states.
The outcome carries significant weight for Trump, as midterm elections are widely viewed as a referendum on the president’s approval rating among voters.
Historically, the party occupying the White House usually forfeits seats in Congress to the opposition during midterms, putting Trump’s Republican Party at the greatest risk of losing ground.
Republicans, who maintain narrow majorities in both the House and Senate, are determined to preserve their congressional control, as any seat loss would impair their capacity to enact legislation and influence policy.
Democrats are eager to capture congressional control from Republicans. Securing a majority would allow them to contest Trump’s agenda, grant investigative authority over his administration, and provide a platform to present their national vision ahead of the 2028 presidential race.

Elected officials at the municipal, state, and federal levels shape numerous facets of daily life, such as gasoline costs, inflation, food prices, healthcare and reproductive rights, income and property taxation, and immigration policies.
