French captain Kylian Mbappe lamented his side’s tactical and technical shortcomings after France failed to secure a spot in the World Cup final, succumbing to a 0-2 loss against Spain in Dallas.
Speaking on Tuesday following the match, Mbappe — who had targeted a third consecutive World Cup final — expressed his frustration with France’s overall display.
“I don’t believe we executed the match we had planned — whether tactically, technically, or in terms of our overall performance level,” Mbappe said to French broadcaster M6.
“Furthermore, failing to meet the expectations of a World Cup semifinal guarantees defeat,” Mbappe added. “Our intention was to apply high‑press tactics to disrupt Spain’s rhythm, as they excel at controlling possession. Unfortunately, we fell short of that objective.”
Mbappe emphasized that the disappointed French squad is eager to rebound after learning from the defeat.
“It was our ambition to reach the final, to provide our nation with the opportunity to continue dreaming and to make history,” he explained.
“We must now confront this setback with heads held high. I believe that both victory and defeat deserve the same dignified composure,” he said.
“At this moment, the disappointment is profound, making it difficult to articulate the depth of our frustration,” Mbappe admitted. “Nevertheless, we must regroup, take some time off, and prepare for the next phase. Football never pauses, so we must move forward, leave this disappointment behind, and extract lessons from it.”
Immense Disappointment
Mbappe identified the core issue in midfield, where France’s duo of Adrien Rabiot and Aurélien Tchouaméni were quickly overrun by Spain’s trio of Rodri, Dani Olmo and Fabian Ruiz.
“We repeatedly found ourselves outnumbered 3‑on‑2 in midfield,” Mbappe said. “Against Spain, that’s a critical problem… When all factors are considered, the result is defeat. It is a massive disappointment.”
Mbappe noted that the French team, though disheartened, intends to bounce back after reflecting on the loss.
Mbappe pinpointed midfield as the decisive factor, where France’s partnership of Adrien Rabiot and Aurélien Tchouaméni were swiftly overwhelmed by Spain’s trio of Rodri, Dani Olmo and Fabian Ruiz.
“We constantly faced a 3‑on‑2 numerical disadvantage in midfield,” Mbappe explained. “Dealing with that against Spain proves to be a genuine obstacle… When all elements are taken together, the outcome is a loss. It represents a profound disappointment.”
He added that the French squad, though crestfallen, remains committed to learning from the setback and returning stronger.
