Rory McIlroy recorded a five‑under‑par 65 on the third day, moving into a tie for second place at the BMW Championship.
The Northern Irishman improved upon his second‑round 69, birdieing four of the final six holes to climb to second place at 12‑under par.
American Patrick Cantlay matched McIlroy with a 66 on Saturday, while compatriot Wyndham Clark widened his lead at Bellerive Country Club to five strokes, posting a 65.
Clark double‑bogeyed the opening hole but responded strongly, recording two birdies and an eagle on the eighth to reach two‑under at the turn.
He subsequently birdied four of the following five holes before bogeying the final hole, finishing the day at 17‑under overall.
Home players Chris Gotterup and Gary Woodland were tied at 11‑under, while compatriot Collin Morikawa stood at 10‑under and South Korea’s Im Sung‑Jae at 9‑under.
Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre and world‑number‑one American Scottie Scheffler posted 68s, joining a group of eight at 15‑under, with England’s Aaron Rai and Matthew Fitzpatrick a stroke back.
Veteran Englishmen Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood fell further down the leaderboard after over‑par rounds; Rose carded 73, leaving him at 1‑under, while Fleetwood’s 74 left him at 2‑over.
