Medics report that an Israeli airstrike killed six members of a single family in Gaza City.
Video footage revealed the family’s apartment engulfed in flames overnight in the western al‑Sabra neighbourhood.
The brother of Firas al‑Masri told the BBC that he, his wife Salsabeel, and their three daughters and son—Faryal, Salma, Amira and Naim—had perished in the blaze.
The Israeli military stated that the strike aimed at a Hamas operative and said it was still assessing the outcome of the attack.
According to the Hamas‑run health ministry in Gaza, at least 1,168 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since the cease‑fire between Israel and Hamas began last October.
Over the same period, four Israeli soldiers have been killed in Palestinian attacks in Gaza.
Following Tuesday’s strike in Gaza City, the UN human rights office condemned the recent escalation of Israeli military operations in Gaza.
Between 13 and 20 July, at least 57 Palestinians—including six children and eight women—were killed in strikes on residential buildings, a displaced‑persons tent camp, and other crowded areas, said spokesman Thameen Al‑Kheetan.
He added that thirty‑four of those victims were killed far from the so‑called Yellow Line, which demarcates the area of Gaza under Israeli control.
“Nine months after the cease‑fire was announced, nowhere in Gaza remains safe for Palestinians,” Al‑Kheetan said.
He also warned that civilian deaths raise concerns of ongoing violations of international humanitarian law, potential war crimes, and other possible atrocity crimes in Gaza.
The Israeli military recently announced a series of strikes targeting members of Palestinian armed groups, whom it says participated in the Hamas‑led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023—an assault that killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage.
Israel responded with a large‑scale military campaign in Gaza, during which the Gaza health ministry reports more than 73,290 people have been killed.
