Scottish Para-athlete Melanie Woods risks losing her Commonwealth Games women’s 1500m T54 gold medal and the associated Games record after officials ordered a race re-run following an appeal.
At 31, Woods set a new Games record with her victory on Wednesday in her hometown, though the Scotstoun event was overshadowed by a crash on the first lap.
Canada’s Nandini Sharma initially finished second behind Woods but was disqualified for her involvement in the incident.
After Canada’s appeal was rejected and further protests from Australia and Mauritius, the Para‑athletics authorities—not the Glasgow 2026 organizers—determined that the race must be re‑run on Friday.
Woods finished ahead of England’s Ellis Kottas and Australia’s Mikaela Dingley, but because the medal ceremony was scheduled for Thursday, no medals had been awarded yet.
The Scottish athlete, who has used a wheelchair since being struck by a car while cycling in 2018, is also slated to compete in the 400 m event Friday morning.
The 400 m heats will begin just over 90 minutes after the re‑run final.
Team Scotland issued a statement saying, “We note the decision of the Jury of Appeal concerning the Women’s T54 1500 m final. Melanie Woods and Joanna Robertson will now prepare to compete again in Friday’s rerun.”
