Mercedes Shifts Focus to 2027 Amid Commanding 2026 Charge

Mercedes holds a 145-point lead over its closest rivals in the 2026 Formula 1 constructors’ championship, a margin team principal Toto Wolff describes as a “nice buffer” that allows the team to redirect attention toward 2027 development.

After a difficult ground-effect era, the Silver Arrows have thoroughly dominated the 2026 regulations, leading Ferrari in the standings and with Kimi Antonelli atop the drivers’ championship.

Mercedes has claimed 10 victories from 14 races this season despite upgrades from McLaren and Ferrari. The outfit introduced updates at the Canadian Grand Prix in May and plans another package for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, supplemented by minor track-specific adjustments, though its part-development rate has lagged behind Ferrari and McLaren.

The Silver Arrows’ development tempo could continue this way, as Wolff confirmed resources are already being redistributed toward next year’s car.

“2027 started a while ago, before the summer,” he said after Antonelli won the first Spanish Grand Prix to be held at the Madring. “Summer we switched resources into next year and that continues as per the plan independent of where we’re standing in the championship.”

For now, the championship appears secure. Ferrari faces a steep deficit, and while McLaren has gained momentum through Lando Norris’s two wins, the gap looks unassailable.

Nevertheless, Wolff urges caution regarding 2026 prospects.

“A double DNF or crash can erase a seemingly comfortable lead in an instant, and with six races remaining, the cushion can vanish overnight,” Wolff warned on Sunday.

“My view is that we should ignore the points until victory becomes mathematically impossible for our rivals, and until then focus on delivering our best performance every single weekend,” he added.

To maintain that standard, Mercedes has a “solid” upgrade ready for Malaysia. While Wolff acknowledges that new parts can be unpredictable, he expressed confidence in the package debuting next month.

“I think we are bringing a solid upgrade in Malaysia,” he told Sky Sports on Saturday. “So, we got to survive another one in Baku and let’s see, but sometimes it doesn’t correlate with the road so well.

“So, I hope that it does and hopefully that puts us on par with the others in terms of upgrades but we never know.”
