Nine people were rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in a building on Jerusalem’s Meir Avner Street on Thursday, the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority said.
The fire started in the building’s shelter and was sparked by an electric scooter battery, according to the authority.
Fire crews worked to put out the flames, search for any additional trapped residents and ventilate the five-story building.
Battalion Commander Adi Mor said firefighters were operating in difficult conditions, including heavy smoke inside a residential building, as they worked to save lives. He credited the crews’ swift and professional response with rescuing all nine trapped individuals without injuries.
Mor said firefighting teams remained at the scene to complete their searches and clear smoke from the building.
The Jerusalem District of Israel Fire and Rescue Services said firefighters also searched the railway station and determined there was no danger.
