Even in a rare moment of failure, Lionel Messi continues to redefine the record books.

While his goal-scoring prowess typically dominates the headlines, recent events have seen the Argentine captain set some less desirable benchmarks.

During the match, Argentina were awarded a penalty after Lautaro Martinez was fouled, but Messi sent the resulting spot-kick wide of the target.

“There was a moment where I was very angry about the penalty because I missed it and I took it very, very badly,” Messi admitted. “Luckily, we were able to reverse that situation, take the lead, and secure the three points.”

In doing so, he became the first player to miss a penalty at the 2026 World Cup. He now holds the record for both the most penalties taken (seven) and the most missed (three) in the history of the tournament, excluding penalty shootouts.

Additionally, he has failed to convert six of 31 penalties during his international career with Argentina.

However, by redeeming himself with a double, this marked the first time in a competitive fixture for Argentina that Messi has scored after missing a penalty in the same game.

“Messi is human after all; he’s allowed the odd mistake,” noted analyst Murphy.

Some suggest that his record-breaking goal was destined to be a moment of individual brilliance rather than a simple spot-kick.

“He might have missed it on purpose,” Murphy joked. “Maybe breaking the record was meant for a better goal.”

South American football expert Tim Vickery agreed, stating: “The gods of football obviously didn’t want him to break the record with a penalty; they wanted him to break it with a goal from open play.”

“Argentina have built the team around him, and I just don’t want the carnival to end,” Vickery added.

Despite his vast array of achievements, more milestones remain within reach.

The next target is the record for the most World Cup assists, where Messi currently sits tied with Diego Maradona at eight.

The final group match against Jordan (Sunday, 03:00 BST) provides Messi with his next opportunity to further etch his name into footballing history.
