Meta Agrees to $16.7B Settlement and Teen Usage Limits in Multi‑State Lawsuit

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has agreed to pay up to $16.7 billion and impose new restrictions on teenage users of its platforms as part of a California lawsuit brought by a coalition of US states.

The settlement is still pending court approval.

The proposal, filed in federal court on Wednesday, seeks to resolve claims from a total of 47 states.

In addition to the financial penalty, the agreement requires Meta to introduce various measures aimed at enhancing child safety and discouraging excessive use, including restrictions during overnight hours and school periods.
