Metallica performed iconic tracks by Irish and Scottish artists during their recent UK shows, including The Proclaimers’ ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ in Glasgow and The Pogues’ ‘Dirty Old Town’ in Dublin. Fans can view footage from these highlights below.
During their M72 World Tour, the band chose these locations to pay homage to local musical legends. In Glasgow, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo included the tribute in their mid-set ‘Kirk and Rob Doodle’ segment, following a performance of Nazareth’s ‘Hair Of The Dog.’
The band later replicated this format in Dublin, where they handled Ewan MacColl’s ‘Dirty Old Town’—a song famously tied to Irish music despite its Salford origins. The choice underscored their commitment to connecting with regional musical heritage.
The ‘Kirk and Rob Doodle’ has become a signature element of Metallica’s live sets, allowing Hammett and Trujillo to showcase spontaneous jam sessions. Previous iterations included performances of Rammstein’s ‘Sonne’ in Berlin and ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ in Sweden.
