Meta’s newly launched Muse personal artificial intelligence (AI) agent has quickly risen to become the most downloaded app in Apple’s App Store, reaching the top spot shortly after its release earlier this month.
In the U.S. App Store rankings, Muse claimed the number one position among free apps, overtaking other popular AI tools including OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
This rapid ascent highlights a growing consumer trend toward agentic AI applications—tools that actively assist users across various tasks—as opposed to traditional chatbots designed primarily for conversational responses and information retrieval.
Launched in early September, the Muse AI agent integrates with a wide array of apps spanning categories such as email, calendar, payments, health, shopping, and smart home systems, according to Meta.

Inspired by the open-source AI framework OpenClaw, Muse operates autonomously to perform complex actions such as drafting and sending emails, arranging travel bookings, facilitating car sales, and negotiating utility bills on behalf of users, as stated by Meta.
With robust privacy controls, the Muse app empowers users to select which third-party apps the AI agent can interact with and offers the flexibility to revoke permissions at any time.
Each instance of Muse runs within its own isolated virtual machine—a cloud-hosted emulation of a personal computer—enabling continuous background operation even when the user is not actively engaged with the app.

According to Meta, users can communicate their objectives directly to Muse, which then executes tasks using the proprietary Muse Spark model tailored for real-world agentic functionality. From simple actions like sending messages and booking flights to managing multi-step projects, Muse adapts dynamically to user needs.
Upon receiving a task, Muse assists users in creating personalized plans, coordinating schedules and resources efficiently while autonomously progressing through steps—navigating browsers, completing forms, and even conducting negotiations independently.
For extended operations, Muse continues functioning beyond active app usage, re-engaging automatically when updates occur or manual approvals are required—for example, prior to dispatching emails or processing purchases.

The Muse AI agent retains knowledge of individual user preferences, allowing it to provide proactive recommendations and act on previously discussed details without explicit reminders.
As demonstrated by Meta, Muse can transform a recipe saved on Instagram into a curated grocery list, suggest menus for dinner parties based on past guest dietary restrictions, and seamlessly send out invitations—all through intuitive automation.

Integrating Muse with numerous connected apps broadens its functionality significantly, though it also introduces potential risks related to safety and reliability if the agent mishandles sensitive personal data.
To mitigate these concerns, Meta delayed Muse’s initial rollout in April to enhance security protocols. This additional development phase enabled the product to meet internal benchmarks for safety, security, privacy, performance, and compliance, as noted by Vishal Shah, Vice President of AI Products at Meta.

Later this year, Meta plans to launch Muse Confidential VM, ensuring end-to-end encryption of all user data and interactions with the Muse agent—an architecture accessible exclusively by the user.
