The Mets are once again presenting an opportunity for a utility infielder.

When Marcus Semien was placed on the 10‑day injured list due to a left hip flexor strain on Thursday, the Mets promoted Ronny Mauricio from Triple‑A Syracuse.

Mauricio, who went 1‑for‑5 in the Mets’ 4‑3, ten‑inning loss to the Cubs at Citi Field, has experienced a roller‑coaster career with the big‑league club.

He sat out the entire 2024 season after a knee injury that necessitated multiple surgeries.

After fracturing his thumb in May, he finally returned to the Mets, though inconsistency at the plate has limited his production, posting a .662 OPS over 61 games since 2025.

Mauricio is batting .216 for the Mets this season.

His thumb fracture kept him from capitalizing on an opportunity when Francisco Lindor missed time with a calf strain in late April.

Now, with the injury carousel still turning, Mauricio receives another opportunity; Semien’s IL stint follows Lindor’s return just a day earlier, while Jorge Polanco remains sidelined indefinitely with Achilles bursitis.

“Overall, I thought the at-bats were OK, especially from the right side,” manager Carlos Mendoza said of Mauricio’s return. “First game back, after being out for quite a bit … as far as that, I thought it was OK.”

Mauricio contributed a double and a strikeout in the loss and committed an error on a throw to first in the sixth inning.

On Thursday, Mauricio had a pivotal opportunity in the bottom of the ninth with two on and two outs; a walk‑off hit could have secured a memorable victory.

He grounded out, sending the game to extra innings; in the 10th, Pete Crow‑Armstrong’s double drove in the automatic runner Matt Shaw, giving the Cubs the lead.

Mauricio is likely to receive further opportunities, especially as manager Carlos Mendoza described Semien’s status as “week to week” prior to Thursday’s loss.

Mauricio hopes this stint can serve as a turning point in a big‑league career that, despite moments of promise, has been largely disappointing.
