Former Australian international cricketer Michael Hussey has been appointed as a coaching consultant by Cricket Australia for key assignments, including the 2027 Ashes and the ODI World Cup. He will also serve as a T20 advisor for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the upcoming 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Hussey has previously contributed to the Australian squad’s development under coach Andrew McDonald. While his role was primarily as an additional batting consultant leading up to the annual Perth Test, he declined to make a permanent commitment due to his ongoing commentary duties and his independent coaching roles with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and Welsh Fire in the Hundred.
Previously, Hussey was approached by former Delhi Capitals colleague Stephen Fleming regarding the England Test position, but he respectfully declined the offer to return to Australia and focus on his new consulting role.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Hussey stated, “I am extremely delighted to join the team in a formal and meaningful capacity for the coming years. Having witnessed their remarkable achievements recently, I hope my contributions can add significant value to both the coaching and playing groups as we navigate what promises to be an exciting and demanding chapter.”
Australia head coach Andrew McDonald welcomed Mike Hussey to the coaching staff, highlighting the former Australian batter’s wealth of experience spanning international cricket across all formats and global T20 competitions.
First Assignment for Michael Hussey
Hussey’s primary responsibility will involve bolstering Australia’s T20 setup. Previously a member of England’s coaching staff under Matthew Mott during their 2022 T20 World Cup triumph, his dual background as a player and coach is expected to seamlessly complement the existing coaching group and provide vital additional support to the players.
To balance his workload, McDonald will absent himself from Australia’s impending T20 International series against England for a planned break, with assistant Andre Borovec stepping in as interim captain. Borovec has frequently filled in during McDonald’s absences over the past three years, affording the head coach dedicated time to focus on preparations for the major looming assignments.
Hussey will commence his consultancy tenure alongside Borovec and the relatively young Australian squad during the forthcoming England series. He will also maintain an active involvement in the team’s overarching strategic planning and preparations for the major 2028 T20 events, even when not physically present with the touring squad.
Australia’s head of national teams, Ben Oliver, underscored Hussey’s appointment as a crucial addition to the coaching architecture, especially given the relentless Test schedule ahead. His role entails close collaboration with team management, coaches, and selectors to deliver targeted expertise specifically tailored to the T20 format.
With his extensive T20 expertise, Hussey is poised to play a pivotal role in Australia’s preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the concurrent 2028 T20 World Cup.
