[Falcons Set Stage for Quarterback Return Following ACL Recovery]
The Falcons have officially appointed Michael Penix Jr. as their starter for Thursday’s matchup against the Packers, a decision the organization confirmed Monday.
This move follows a difficult opening stretch for Atlanta, who began the season 0-2, highlighted by a season-opening loss to Pittsburgh and a devastating 34-3 rout of the Panthers in their inaugural home game. Offensively, the unit has struggled desperately throughout these initial contests, failing to execute even in high-pressure red zone situations.
Penix underwent surgery following an ACL tear during Week 11, resulting in his absence from the final seven games of the season. Although he received clearance to train fully last month, the young quarterback indicated he did not feel prepared to face his former opponent in Week 12.
ESPN previously reported that Penix was possible starter against Green Bay, but head coach Kevin Stefanski declined to confirm availability during Monday morning press conference.
“I will let you guys know,” Stefanski stated. “I will provide an update once I’ve spoken with players and worked through it. There’s no update right now. However, consistent communication with Mike and the rest of our staff means we’ll sort this out this week.”
Responding to questions about the situation, Stefanski emphasized the need to consult with the team first before making decisions regarding player readiness. “I want to ensure I speak directly with our players,” he added, highlighting the importance of team cohesion before committing an injury-caught quarterback to play.
While Penix expressed earlier hopes to start in the season opener, he clarified that personal fitness limitations prevented acceptance of Pittsburgh at the time.
“I simply informed head coach Kevin Stefanski that I wasn’t where I wanted to be yet,” Penix told reporters on September 7. “My goal is to be fully healthy so I can contribute to winning football games. I’m very close. Truly close.”
The Falcons are also navigating additional setbacks with offensive leader Tua Tagovailoa, who misses time due to an oblique injury sustained just days before the Week 1 contest.
