Michael Vaughan has identified the 2027 Ashes on home soil as the most manageable of three major Test assignments awaiting England over the next few years. The five-match series is set to commence at Trent Bridge on June 18, followed by fixtures at Lord’s, Edgbaston, the Utilita Bowl, and The Oval. Vaughan ranks this home campaign as less demanding than England’s upcoming away tours to South Africa and Bangladesh.
The former England captain explained his reasoning during an appearance on the Stick to Cricket Podcast. Before hosting Australia, England are scheduled to play three Tests in South Africa and two in Bangladesh. Vaughan offered a detailed comparison of the three series, evaluating the relative strength of each opponent and the conditions England will face.
“England plays South Africa for three, Bangladesh for two away. From what I see already, I think the Aussie series next summer, the five here in the UK… I think of those three series, it (the Ashes) is the easiest,”
Why Vaughan Rates the 2027 Ashes as England’s Easiest Assignment
Vaughan’s confidence stems from a significant historical trend: Australia has not won an Ashes series in England since 2001—a drought spanning more than 25 years prior to the 2027 fixture. This unbeaten home record forms the cornerstone of his assessment.
“We haven’t lost against Australia here in the UK since 2001. I am not wrong. That’s the easiest of the three series,” Vaughan said.
Contrasting Challenges in South Africa and Bangladesh
In contrast, Vaughan highlighted the formidable obstacles presented by the other two tours.
“South Africa away from home, they are the best team in the world. Bangladesh in their own backyard, two Tests on dusty wickets, we are not picking our best spinner… and then Australia at home,” Vaughan concluded.
