Michigan Looks to Bounce Back Against No. 11 Oklahoma in Week 2 Big Noon Kickoff

The Michigan Wolverines will host the No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday in a Week 2 Big Noon Kickoff matchup airing on FOX.

In one of the most dramatic conclusions in college football history, Michigan converted a miraculous Hail Mary to avoid a stunning upset against Western Michigan in Week 1.

The Wolverines initially believed they had lost until replay review restored one second to the clock, giving them a final chance at a Hail Mary—and they made the most of it.

Despite the victory, the Kyle Whittingham era got off to a shaky start, as Michigan barely escaped a Western Michigan squad that entered as 27.5-point underdogs. Bryce Underwood and the offense sputtered, managing just 13 points, 12 first downs, and 276 total yards.

Still, Michigan sits at 1-0 and now has a prime opportunity to make a statement against a ranked opponent in Week 2.

Oklahoma’s Week 1 opener, by contrast, went far more smoothly. The Sooners rolled past UTEP 51-0, with John Mateer throwing for 225 yards and three touchdowns.

Oklahoma’s defense also hit the ground running, shutting out UTEP after finishing the previous season as one of the top units in the country.

In Week 1, Michigan turned the ball over three times while failing to force a single takeaway. Underwood had an inconsistent outing through the air, completing just 12 of 23 passes (52.2%) for 170 yards and an interception. The Wolverines also struggled on third down, converting only 3 of 10 attempts (30%), compared to Western Michigan’s 8-of-18 mark (44.4%).

So Oklahoma is the obvious play, right? Not so fast.

This is college football, and in a marquee matchup like this, the advantage tilts toward the home team. The betting markets may be overreacting to Michigan’s underwhelming Week 1 showing. Whittingham will have his squad primed for a rebound, and it’s plausible the Wolverines were focused on this matchup and didn’t bring full intensity against a MAC opponent.

That should change Saturday. Michigan will be dialed in for a ranked opponent and a Big Noon Kickoff showdown in front of its home crowd. Back the Wolverines to bounce back and cover the spread.
