On Sunday, Governor Tim Walz activated the state National Guard to assist in combating wildfires along Minnesota’s northern Canadian border.
The blaze has consumed over 800 acres in five days and remains uncontrolled, joining a chain of blazes sweeping the country amid the hot, dry conditions associated with an El Niño spell.
“I have declared a peacetime emergency and authorized the National Guard’s deployment to aid in fighting the northern Minnesota wildfire crisis,” Governor Walz, a Democrat, said. “Minnesotans extend our deepest gratitude to all first responders working around the clock to keep their neighbors safe.”
Across the Superior National Forest, 16 separate fires are uud active; the area typically attracts about 150,000 visitors each summer.
Park rangers have escorted visitors out of the forest throughout the weekend, the Minnesota Natural Resources Department said.
According to the National Weather Service, elevated temperatures during the weekend heightened fire risk.
