MLB Playoff Standings: Brewers Clinch Fourth Straight NL Central Title as Race Tightens Across League

Nothing captivates baseball fans quite like postseason play. With that in mind, the MLB playoff picture continues to take shape as teams push toward securing their spots.

In the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers have locked up their fourth consecutive NL Central championship, while the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves remain firmly in control of their respective divisions. The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs are vying for wild card berths, and the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres are locked in a tight contest for the final playoff spot.

The American League races remain considerably more competitive. The Chicago White Sox are working to hold off the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central, and the Houston Astros maintain a narrow advantage over the Texas Rangers in the AL West. The Tampa Bay Rays lead the AL East, with the New York Yankees trailing close behind.

Below is a snapshot of where the major postseason races stand heading into the final stretch. Standings are current as of Sept. 15.

Two AL East teams — the Rays and Yankees — remain in contention, with Tampa Bay holding a slight edge. The two sides still have a four-game series later this month that could determine the division winner.

New York has already clinched at least one AL wild card spot, doing so on Monday as Aaron Judge hit his first home run since returning from the injured list in an 8-3 victory over the Twins. Boston sits behind both the Rays and Yankees in the standings but remains well positioned to secure a wild card berth.

Chicago and Cleveland are in the middle of a three-game series from Sept. 14–16 that will go a long way toward determining who claims the AL Central crown.

Minnesota and Detroit have not been mathematically eliminated, but it appears the White Sox or Guardians will be the team advancing to the final weeks of the season.

The AL West remains the closest division race in the entire league.

Houston’s lead over Texas stands at just a single game, though the Astros hold the tiebreaker advantage. The Mariners, who nearly reached the World Series last year, are on the brink of elimination.

New York and Boston hold the top two AL wild card spots. Cleveland, Toronto, Baltimore and Texas are all within 3.5 games of each other for the final berth. Seattle and Detroit cannot be counted out.

The Angels and Athletics have been eliminated from playoff consideration.

Atlanta leads Philadelphia by 5.5 games in the NL East race. The Phillies suffered a setback when All-Star pitcher Jesus Luzardo was placed on the injured list with a shoulder issue, making it likely that Philadelphia will finish as a wild card team.

The Brewers boast the best record in baseball and have now clinched a fourth straight NL Central title.

Milwaukee’s rotation depth is a key strength, anchored by NL Cy Young frontrunner Jacob Misiorowski, who became the second-fastest pitcher in MLB history to reach 200 strikeouts in a season last month.

The Cubs hold one of the top NL wild card spots. Pete Crow-Armstrong has positioned himself as an MVP candidate after recording a 30-home run, 30-stolen base season while leading the majors in WAR.

The Dodgers have moved another step closer to a third consecutive World Series appearance. By securing at least a wild card spot, Los Angeles has made the postseason in 14 straight seasons, matching Atlanta’s all-time record set from 1991 to 2005. The team is on the verge of capturing its 13th NL West title in the past 14 seasons.

The Dodgers will aim to finish in one of the top two spots in the NL, which would provide a much-needed first-round bye. Star first baseman Freddie Freeman and MVP candidate Shohei Ohtani are both currently on the 15-day injured list due to right biceps inflammation.

Arizona and San Diego remain locked in a battle for the final NL wild card spot.

Philadelphia and Chicago lead the NL wild card standings. San Diego holds the final spot by 2.5 games over Arizona, though its eight-game winning streak was snapped on Tuesday.

Other teams that have not yet been eliminated from contention include Miami, St. Louis and Pittsburgh. The Rockies, Giants, Reds, Mets and Nationals have all been eliminated.

In the American League, only two teams — the Rays and Yankees — have clinched postseason berths.

The Brewers, winners of the NL Central, and the Dodgers, who are likely to wrap up the NL West crown this week, are the two NL teams that have secured playoff spots. The Braves still have a magic number of three games to clinch their postseason berth and remain on track to win the NL East.
