Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has called on skipper Shreyas Iyer to afford Ravi Bishnoi consistent support and a secure spot in the playing XI for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, which commences on July 23. Kaif emphasized that providing Bishnoi with assured game time is crucial for the leg-spinner, who is seeking to rebuild his confidence following a challenging tour in England.
Bishnoi was omitted after the second T20I versus England at Old Trafford, where he conceded 60 runs in four overs without claims. The decision was particularly impactful as he had replaced injured Varun Chakaravarthy. The Zimbabwe series, to be played at Harare Sports Club from July 23 to 26, presents a critical opportunity for Bishnoi to regain form and prove his worth in the shorter format.
“Bishnoi only played one match in England before he was dropped. I want to see Iyer handle Bishnoi well. Tell him, ‘Brother, no matter how you play, you will get the full series’. Atleast give him the chance. If you give him just one match and then drop him, then there will be insecurity in the team,” Kaif said on Cricbuzz.

Kaif highlighted that prematurely dropping players after isolated poor performances can create psychological strain within the squad, hindering their long-term growth. The former international stressed that T20 cricket demands fearless, attacking play, which is difficult to achieve under constant pressure. In Bishnoi’s case, Kaif believes providing unwavering support will allow him to bowl freely and rediscover his rhythm.
“A player coming into the team witnessing this might think that if he does not perform in one match, he might get dropped. If you don’t come in with the attacking style without any pressure, then you will lag behind in T20 cricket. So, in my opinion, Bishnoi, especially, assure him that you will play all matches, so bowl freely,” the expert added.
Bishnoi has a favorable history against Zimbabwe, claiming six wickets in five T20Is at an average of 17.66 and an economy rate of 5.57. Despite this, Iyer aims to see improved wicket-taking consistency, even if it means conceding slightly more runs.
