Sophie Molineux intends to “double down” on the pressure facing India as they fight for knockout stage qualification in their highly anticipated final group match against Australia at Lord’s this Sunday.India represents the first significant challenge for an Australian side that has dominated the tournament thus far. The only team to have come close to threatening Australia was South Africa, who managed to reduce them to 24-2 and 62-4 during the powerplay of their opening match. However, Australia recovered to secure a commanding 65-run victory after posting 172-8, eventually bowling out the defending runners-up for just 107 within 17 overs.India’s recent form includes victories over Pakistan by 64 runs, the Netherlands by 95 runs, and Bangladesh by five wickets, despite a six-wicket loss to South Africa. India will be closely monitoring the preceding match between South Africa and Bangladesh; a South African victory would leave India with no choice but to defeat Australia to remain in contention for the semi-finals.
“We are in a slightly different position than India,” Molineux explained. “We still need to secure a win to ensure we finish where we want. We recognize the pressure they are under, and we hope to capitalize on that by applying significant pressure early in the game.”
“Matches against India are always intense and high-quality. With a sold-out crowd expected, we know it will be a major occasion and we are looking forward to the challenge.”
Australia’s lineup is expected to be strengthened by the return of opening batter Phoebe Litchfield, who missed the previous two matches due to a quad injury.Sophie Molineux: Games against India are always, always good, always intense•Getty Images
“Phoebe will return to the top order, which means someone else will unfortunately have to make way. I’m not entirely sure who that will be yet,” Molineux noted.
“We will likely monitor the pitch conditions closely, especially with the sun out at the moment. One of the strengths of our squad is the depth we possess, which has allowed us to adapt throughout this tour.”
During this tournament, Australia has recorded its two highest T20 World Cup totals: 219-6 against the Netherlands and 199-7 against Pakistan. Their aggressive starts—61-2 against the Netherlands and 64-1 against Pakistan during the powerplay—suggest a clear strategy to exert early dominance over India.
“That aligns with our team identity and how we want to play,” Molineux said. “Our batting lineup is incredibly explosive, featuring natural run-scorers who can maintain a high strike rate.”
“Our goal is to unlock that potential and encourage the players to play freely during the powerplay and beyond. It has been encouraging to see various players contributing runs across different matches.”
“It is beneficial that everyone has had a chance to contribute during the tournament, which should leave our top and middle orders well-prepared for the upcoming matches.”
Additionally, captain Beth Mooney has escaped serious injury after dislocating her finger twice while wicketkeeping against Pakistan, a feat that has earned Molineux’s immense respect.
“It doesn’t look swollen at all, which is a miracle,” Molineux remarked regarding Mooney. “She is incredibly tough and will be ready to go this Sunday. I don’t envy her having that happen twice in one game, but she stayed on the field. She has shown that resilience for us many times over the years.”
Australia lost two of their three T20 encounters during India’s tour in February. India also notably defeated Australia in the semi-finals of the 50-over World Cup, though Australia secured a 3-0 sweep in the ODI portion of that same tour.
