Montreal Police Officer, Civilian Killed in Midtown Shooting; Suspect Also Dead

A shooting in Montreal on Monday left a police officer, a civilian, and the suspect dead, according to authorities.

The unidentified male suspect, believed to have acted alone, was killed at the scene by police, Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher said. One other officer was critically injured and remained in stable condition.

The incident occurred in the Côte-des-Neiges district, a diverse neighborhood. A witness reported seeing a firearm through a window, heard gunfire, and immediately contacted police, investigators said.

Quebec’s security minister confirmed the motive remained unclear.

Following the shooting, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police issued an alert to police forces across Canada, reporting that a document had been circulating allegedly encouraging citizens to target police officers, according to the Globe and Mail.

Local resident Danny Wilk told AFP he heard shots fired near his home and took shelter in a nearby pizzeria, where he observed the shooter—dressed in military-style clothing—appearing ready to fire his weapon.

Wilk stated he witnessed the officer on the ground before police fatally shot the suspect.

This marks the first time a Montreal police officer has been killed in the line of duty in nearly 25 years.

During a press conference, a visibly emotional Dagher described the scene as “a nightmare.”

Shortly after, the police department identified the fallen officer as Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, a member of the force since 2021.
