A suspect armed with a long gun fired upon a Montreal hotel, fatally wounding an officer before being killed by police responding to the scene
Authorities confirmed Monday that a civilian also died during the incident, though authorities have not yet determined if the same individual was responsible for that fatality
Police Chief Fady Dagher stated this marked the first time in 24 years an on-duty officer had been killed in Montreal. “It’s a very sad day—it’s a nightmare,” Dagher told reporters
The shooting began around 11:35 a.m. when emergency services were contacted about an individual displaying a weapon from a hotel window. Police arrived and were immediately targeted with gunfire
Video footage showed the suspect remained outside the Hilton as the confrontation unfolded
Investigators are still examining the suspect’s motive
Dagher stated he could not confirm which party fired the shot that killed the civilian
Jacob Coutu, a construction worker near the scene, described hearing “four to five gunshots” followed by chaotic police arrival and gunfire
Coutu estimated he heard approximately 30 to 40 total shots
Public safety authorities issued an emergency shelter-in-place alert, resulting in temporary highway closures on the Décarie expressway and partial subway line shutdowns
Dagher confirmed the suspect’s death prior to the alert being lifted shortly after 3 p.m.
