On Monday, a midday gun attack in Montreal resulted in three fatalities— a police officer, a civilian, and the alleged gunman— raising unusual alarm across the Canadian city.
The shooting occurred in a neighborhood with a significant Jewish community, home to kosher markets and restaurants. Police have not yet commented on the motive or whether the incident constitutes a hate crime or act of terror.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher described the incident as “more than terrible.”
He added, “It’s a tragedy, a nightmare.”
While gun violence in daylight is far less common in Canada than in the United States, it is not unheard of. Incidents of this nature in Montreal are rare.
Police received a call reporting an active shooting in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time.
