Former captain MS Dhoni attracted attention for his presence in the hospitality box at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Tuesday, July 7, as he watched India face England in the third T20I. The occasion doubled as a celebration, marking Dhoni’s 45th birthday.
A Star Sports video captured Dhoni enjoying the match in an informal setting. Unfortunately for the former skipper, India suffered a commanding 125-run defeat, casting a shadow over his special day.
It remains relatively uncommon to see Dhoni attending matches where he isn’t actively participating. Recently, he was part of the Chennai Super Kings squad for the 2026 Indian Premier League but was ruled out for the entire season due to injury. He made his only appearance of the campaign in the final home fixture, making his Trent Bridge visit an unusual absence from the ongoing tour.
At 45, Dhoni appears to be approaching the latter stages of his distinguished career. While he remains under contract with Chennai Super Kings and has not officially retired, his reduced involvement in recent seasons suggests a natural transition may be imminent.
India’s T20I campaign in Europe has been disappointing, with four consecutive losses compounding their 2-0 series deficit against Ireland and two defeats at the hands of England. Shreyas Iyer’s team faces elimination from the series with two matches remaining unless they secure victories in both fixtures.
