The European Space Agency (ESA) has achieved a significant breakthrough in Earth observation and meteorological science, addressing critical challenges posed by the ongoing climate crisis and increasing frequency of meteorological disasters. The MTG-I2 (“Meteosat Third Generation Imager-2”) satellite was successfully launched on 27 July aboard the Ariane 6 rocket from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

With this successful deployment, ESA now completes the first trio in the Meteosat Third Generation constellation (MTG). MTG-I2 is the second imaging satellite in this advanced fleet, joining the first Imager launched in 2022 and the Sounder deployed in 2025. Following its commissioning phase, the constellation will operate at full capacity, significantly enhancing Europe’s weather monitoring capabilities.
Revolution in forecasting extreme weather events
Positioned approximately 36,000 kilometres above Earth in geostationary orbit, MTG-I2 maintains a fixed vantage point to provide continuous coverage of the planet’s surface. Equipped with the state-of-the-art Flexible Combined Imager, the satellite delivers rapid-scan imaging services over Europe, capturing high-resolution observations every 2.5 minutes.
This unprecedented refresh rate marks a paradigm shift in nowcasting, substantially improving short-term weather prediction accuracy. The enhanced data stream proves essential for monitoring natural disasters such as floods or wildfires. The advanced technology enables real-time tracking of atmospheric fronts, early detection of severe storm development including DANA events, and improved surveillance of fire outbreaks and air quality across Europe, particularly focusing on the Mediterranean region and North Africa.
The satellite also carries the Lightning Imager sensor, capable of detecting and mapping individual lightning discharges during both daylight and nighttime conditions. When combined with other MTG constellation elements, these assets form the foundation for a comprehensive “weather cube” – a three-dimensional atmospheric model integrating lightning activity, wind patterns, cloud dynamics, and greenhouse gas concentrations.
A milestone for the Ariane 6 rocket and subsequent operational phases
This launch represents the ninth mission of Ariane 6 (source in Spanish) and marks the first instance of this European heavy-lift launch vehicle delivering a satellite to Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO). To achieve its maximum altitude, the rocket flew in a configuration equipped with two P120C solid-fuel boosters.
Following separation, ground control successfully established communication with the spacecraft. Engineering teams are currently managing the deployment of the satellite’s solar arrays and gradually activating its propulsion system to incrementally raise the perigee and adjust trajectory toward final geostationary positioning. Upon reorientation toward Earth, the Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) concludes, initiating the scientific calibration process.
European industrial collaboration and program outlook
The MTG constellation development has been spearheaded by ESA in partnership with a European industrial consortium led by Thales Alenia Space, supported by OHB System and Leonardo. Following completion of the calibration phase, operational responsibility for the satellite fleet and data distribution to the global scientific community will transition to Eumetsat.
The new constellation ensures continuation of observational data initiated by the Meteosat Second Generation series (operational between 2002 and 2015). Looking ahead, ESA plans to deploy a second generation of MTG satellites starting in 2033, securing meteorological service continuity beyond 2040.
