The European Space Agency (ESA) has achieved a significant milestone in Earth observation and meteorological science with the successful launch of the MTG-I2 (“Meteosat Third Generation Imager-2”) satellite. Lifted aboard an Ariane 6 rocket from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, this launch marks a critical advancement in the continent’s capabilities to monitor weather patterns and address climate-related challenges.

With the successful launch of the MTG-I2 on July 27, the European Space Agency completes the foundational triad of the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) constellation. As the second imaging satellite in this advanced fleet, MTG-I2 joins the first Imager, launched in 2022, and the Sounder, launched in 2025. Following the conclusion of its initial commissioning phase, the constellation will commence full-scale operations, significantly boosting meteorological monitoring capabilities.
A Revolution in Forecasting Extreme Weather Events
Positioned 36,000 kilometers above Earth in geostationary orbit, the MTG-I2 satellite acts as a high-altitude sentinel, maintaining a fixed position over the planet. Its primary instrument, the Flexible Combined Imager, delivers rapid scanning services over Europe, generating high-resolution observations with an impressive refresh rate of just 2.5 minutes.
This unprecedented update speed marks a paradigm shift in immediate weather forecasting, significantly enhancing the accuracy of early warnings for extreme environmental events. The system will be vital for tracking severe phenomena such as sudden floods, wildfires, and heavy downpours, allowing meteorologists to monitor atmospheric fronts in real time. Key areas of focus will include the Mediterranean and North Africa, where tracking air pollution and fire hazards is of paramount importance.
The satellite also carries the advanced Lightning Imager, a sensor capable of detecting and mapping individual lightning discharges day and night. The integration of these advanced instruments will facilitate the generation of a “weather cube”—a detailed, three-dimensional representation of atmospheric dynamics, including lightning strikes, wind patterns, cloud formations, and greenhouse gas concentrations.
A Milestone for the Ariane 6 Rocket and the Next Operational Steps
This launch represents the ninth mission for the Ariane 6 rocket and marks the first time Europe’s heavy-lift launcher has carried a payload to a Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO). To achieve this record-breaking distance, the vehicle utilized a configuration featuring two robust P120C solid-fuel boosters.
Following successful satellite separation, telemetry confirms that communication with the spacecraft has been firmly established. Ground control teams are now overseeing the deployment of the satellite’s solar arrays and the step-by-step activation of its propulsion system. These maneuvers are designed to elevate the perigee and fine-tune the trajectory for insertion into its final geostationary orbit. Once the spacecraft is properly oriented toward Earth, the Launch and Early Operations Phase (LEOP) will conclude, initiating the critical scientific calibration stage.
Industrial Cooperation and the Future of the Programme
The development of the Meteosat Third Generation family is spearheaded by the ESA in close partnership with a leading European industrial consortium. Headed by Thales Alenia Space, the consortium includes crucial support from key industry players such as OHB System and Leonardo. After calibration milestones are met, operational authority and the distribution of critical data to the global scientific community will transition to Eumetsat.
This advanced fleet ensures the seamless continuation of meteorological data, building upon the legacy of the Meteosat Second Generation series, which was operational from 2002 to 2015. Looking ahead, a subsequent generation of MTG satellites is slated for staggered launches beginning in 2033, securing uninterrupted weather monitoring and climate observation capabilities well past 2040.
