Several individuals have been injured following a sword attack at a high school in Sweden, according to police authorities.
A male suspect has been detained in connection with the incident at Brinell School in Fagersta, central Sweden.
Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene shortly after 14:00 local time (13:00 BST) on Friday. Reports suggest the suspect may have been injured in the leg by police during the confrontation.
The Fagersta municipal council has not released casualty numbers but confirms police are conducting an active search of the building. Eight additional schools in the region have also been placed under lockdown.
Police have stated there is currently no danger to the public.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson characterized the attack as a ‘serious incident’ in an X post, noting that authorities are conducting thorough investigations into the circumstances.
Sweden has experienced multiple attacks on educational institutions in recent years.
The country witnessed its deadliest mass shooting in 2025, when 11 people, including the perpetrator, died at an adult education center in Orebro. This prompted stricter gun control measures after investigators found the suspect legally owned four rifles, three of which were discovered at the attack site.
Two teachers lost their lives in a violent attack at a secondary school in Malmö in 2022, for which an 18-year-old student was later convicted.
A similar sword attack in Trollhattan in 2015 resulted in the deaths of a teacher and a student.
