Motor City, a revenge thriller starring Reacher star Alan Ritchson, will attempt to find an audience on streaming this week after the film, which had only a few lines of dialogue and underperformed at the box office.
Directed by Potsy Ponciroli, Motor City opened in theaters on July 24. Ritchson portrays John Miller, a blue‑collar factory worker in 1970s Detroit who is framed for drug possession after falling for Sophie (Shailene Woodley), the ex‑girlfriend of crime kingpin Reynolds (Ben Foster).
After serving years in prison, Miller escapes and seeks revenge against Reynolds and those who framed him.
After RLJE Films acquired distribution rights in October 2025, Ponciroli told Deadline that he crafted Motor City to be immersive—every frame and sound crafted for the theater, a tribute to Detroit, 1970s cinema, and the visceral experience of theater‑going.
Although critics on Rotten Tomatoes offered modest praise—highlighting its daring, nearly dialogue‑free approach—Motor City failed to generate strong box‑office momentum, earning $1.6 million from 1,600 North American theaters during its opening weekend of July 24‑26. The film has since grossed $2.7 million domestically and roughly $243,000 overseas, for a worldwide total of $2.743 million.
Rated R, Motor City was produced on a $30 million budget, excluding marketing expenses, according to Deadline.
Besides Alan Ritchson, Shailene Woodley and Ben Foster, the cast includes Pablo Schreiber, Lionel Boyce, Amar Chadha‑Patel and Ben McKenzie.
Motor City Debuts on Premium VOD Tuesday
Motor City will launch on premium video‑on‑demand platforms on Tuesday, August 25, as confirmed by a Prime Video listing.
In addition to Prime Video, Motor City is available for purchase on PVOD through services such as Apple TV, Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies, with a purchase price of $24.99. Rentals are generally $5 less, so viewers can rent the film for $19.99 for a 48‑hour period.
