Moby delighted a Dublin audience this week with a live rendition of the Father Ted favourite “My Lovely Horse.” The electronic music pioneer performed at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham on August 21, closing his set with a tribute to one of Ireland’s most cherished comedy songs.

Introducing the track, Moby quipped to the crowd, “If you need a new national anthem, may I suggest this song?”

The song originally appeared in the classic Father Ted episode “A Song for Europe,” where Ted and Dougal represent Ireland in the fictional Eurosong contest, famously scoring “nul points.” Written by The Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon alongside series creators Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews, the track was later released as a B-side on the band’s 1999 single “Gin Soaked Boy.”

This was not Moby’s first time performing the track live; in 2001, he delivered it alongside Father Dougal actor Ardal O’Hanlon to roughly 80,000 people at Slane Castle.

The episode “A Song for Europe” returned to the spotlight earlier this year when Irish broadcaster RTÉ aired it in place of the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, following Ireland’s boycott over Israel’s participation.

Moby is currently midway through a European tour. At a recent Brighton Beach show, he praised the UK’s foundational role in rave culture, crediting British DJs and promoters with transforming house music into the communal phenomenon he experienced in the early 1990s. He released his latest studio album, Future Quiet, in February, and has recently described the current U.S. administration as “the most corrupt, evil and incompetent” in history.
