King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Welcome Max Weinberg for Surprise Drum Duet at Forest Hills Stadium

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard welcomed a legendary guest during their Saturday performance at Queens’ Forest Hills Stadium, as E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg joined the Australian psych-rock outfit onstage. The appearance came just one week after Weinberg’s son, Jay — former Slipknot drummer and frequent collaborator with the band — sat in with the group at their Field of Visions II festival in Colorado.

Jay Weinberg has made several cameo appearances with King Gizzard over recent years, including during the band’s three-night stand in Colorado last weekend. With a similar three-show residency scheduled at Forest Hills Stadium, the band had hoped to continue the tradition. However, as guitarist Joey Walker explained to the crowd, the younger Weinberg was unavailable.

“In continuing with the tradition that we started over the last year or so, where we get our friend Jay Weinberg to come out and play a song with us — it’d be rude not to,” Walker said. “But Jay’s busy, he’s down in Nashville, so Jay made a call. ‘Alright, I’m going to call dad.'”

“So, we got Max Weinberg, drove all the way from Atlantic City to come up and play a song with us, so give it up for fucking Max Weinberg,” Walker added.

The longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen and Conan O’Brien then walked onstage, sticks in hand. “I just got nervous,” Walker quipped. Weinberg took his place behind a second kit for an extended rendition of “Hot Water,” locking in with the band’s percussion section for a thunderous dual-drummer workout.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard conclude their Forest Hills Stadium run Saturday night before crossing into Brooklyn for a Sunday performance at Under the K Bridge Park.
