Preparations for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup are underway. Former Indian fast bowler Munaf Patel has expressed strong support for veteran players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, asserting that India cannot afford to exclude either if the team aims to win the tournament.
Munaf Patel backs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for World Cup campaign
In an interview with journalist Vimal Kumar, Munaf emphasized that India should retain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as long as they continue to perform in ODIs. He urged selectors to refrain from pushing the two legends into retirement, maintaining that they deserve to decide their own departure and to exit the game with a championship trophy.
“As long as they remain active in the format, they cannot be dropped,” Munaf stated. “Big legends who are still performing deserve respect; they should be allowed to retire on their own terms, leaving the game with a trophy and the satisfaction of their achievements, regardless of future fitness.”
The former World Cup champion further pointed out the remarkable consistency of both batsmen over the past decade, arguing that no current player can replace them in India’s ODI setup.
“You cannot win the World Cup without them,” he added. “To triumph in the 2027 World Cup, their presence is indispensable. Over the last decade they have combined for fifty-five centuries — Rohit with 33 or 34 — and have intimidated bowlers. Talent does not fade; they are still exceptionally gifted. With only eight months until the tournament, there is little time to find replacements.”
Munaf’s remarks coincide with growing debate about whether these modern-era icons should extend their careers through the upcoming ODI World Cup, given their age and India’s transitional phase.
Team India faces huge expectations ahead of 2027 World Cup
India will enter the 2027 World Cup amid huge expectations, led by captain Shubman Gill. The team aims to finally secure the 50‑over title after finishing as runners‑up in 2023. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, together with the BCCI, is overseeing a gradual transition while preserving the side’s competitive edge.
The primary selection question revolves around whether Rohit Sharma — who will be 40 during the tournament — and Virat Kohli — who will be 39 — should remain central to India’s batting unit. While Gill is poised to assume a pivotal role in the batting order and bolster his leadership, selectors are also assessing a pool of nearly twenty emerging contenders.
Young talents such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tilak Varma are slated for extended involvement in bilateral ODI series as India builds toward the tournament. However, the playing conditions in South Africa and Zimbabwe will differ markedly from the spin‑friendly pitches witnessed in India during the 2023 World Cup. In addition to pace spearheads Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, the Indian attack will require a balanced fast‑bowling unit capable of exploiting the pace and bounce typical of African venues to mount a genuine title challenge in 2027.
