A murder trial commenced Monday for the former husband and in-laws of Hong Kong socialite Abby Choi, more than three years after the discovery of her dismembered remains in a village house sent shockwaves through a city where violent crime is rare.
Choi’s ex-husband Alex Kwong, his father Kwong Kau, and his brother Anthony Kwong stand accused of killing Choi in February 2023. They face mandatory life imprisonment if convicted of murder, along with charges of preventing the lawful burial of a body.
The 28-year-old Choi was a prominent socialite who documented her glamorous lifestyle—photo shoots and fashion shows—on Instagram. Just days before her death, she had posted about attending a Dior show at Paris Fashion Week.
The killing captivated the Asian financial hub, known for its exceptionally low violent crime rate. Dozens queued outside the courtroom for the hearing, while a live broadcast accommodated the overflow crowd.
All three defendants appeared calm in court, wearing masks. Kwong Kau wore a white T-shirt, while his sons were dressed in suits.
In 2023, police discovered body parts inside a unit in Tai Po, a suburban district of Hong Kong. Officers subsequently searched a landfill for further evidence.
Choi shared two children with Alex Kwong. Following their divorce, she remarried and had two younger children with her second husband.
The prosecution is expected to open its case at a later date. The jury trial is estimated to last 45 days.
