Hundreds of young residents in Nanyuki, central Kenya, have gathered to protest the proposed establishment of an Ebola quarantine center at the nearby Laikipia Air Base. The facility is intended to house United States citizens who have been exposed to the virus.
The demonstrations occurred on Monday, shortly after Kenya’s High Court issued a suspension on the center’s development and the transport of foreign patients. This legal pause follows a challenge filed by the Law Society of Kenya and a constitutional watchdog, both of whom contend that Kenya’s strained healthcare infrastructure is ill-equipped to manage foreign Ebola patients.
U.S. officials, speaking anonymously on Thursday, indicated that the strategy was to quarantine exposed Americans in Kenya rather than transporting them back to the United States. According to these sources, the facility at Laikipia Air Base was scheduled to be operational by Friday with a 50-bed capacity.
However, Health Minister Aden Duale clarified on Sunday that the center would be available to “everyone,” regardless of nationality, rather than being reserved exclusively for U.S. citizens. To support these efforts, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the U.S. government intends to allocate $13.5 million toward Kenya’s Ebola preparedness initiatives.
Local leadership has voiced strong opposition to the project. Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu warned that the center poses a significant risk to the local population, noting that many residents are employed within the air base and could potentially be exposed to the virus.
While Kenya has reported no Ebola cases to date, the regional risk remains high. Neighboring Uganda has recorded nine cases and subsequently closed its border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Official reports indicate that the DRC has seen at least 263 confirmed cases of the Bundibugyo virus, a rare strain of Ebola for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists.
