NASA, Katalyst Amend Mission After Swift Rescue Robot Falters

NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies announced Wednesday they are concluding efforts to rescue the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a gamma-ray telescope approaching reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. The robotic mission, initially slated to deploy a satellite named Link, faced insurmountable technical hurdles despite the spacecraft’s survival in orbit.

The Link satellite, comparable in size to a refrigerator and equipped with solar arrays, electric thrusters, and robotic arm systems, launched July 3 to intercept the observatory and elevate its orbit. However, persistent attitude control failures prevented Link from achieving stability required for course correction. Katalyst confirmed two of its three reaction wheels had failed, compounded by malfunctions in cold gas thrusters, limiting maneuverability to plasma thrusters ill-suited for precise adjustments.

The mission’s short timeline—developed in nine months instead of the usual years—introduced inherent risks that materialized during operation. While Link successfully demonstrated short-range navigation, mission leads acknowledged its inability to execute the full rescue profile.

NASA administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the strategic value of taking calculated risks, noting the mission’s effort addressed pressing orbital decay challenges despite falling short of its goal.

Designed for urgency, the project prioritized speed over exhaustive testing, enabling rapid development but increasing exposure to unresolved technical issues. Link’s initial weeks in orbit showed promise, but system instability emerged late July, curtailing its operational lifespan.

Ongoing analysis of Link’s performance aims to extract operational knowledge for future space salvage or orbital adjustment missions. Both agencies plan to deorbit Link following final data retrieval.
