NASA recently issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) inviting industry collaboration for its Mars Telecommunications Network. This critical network aims to establish reliable, high-bandwidth communication to relay vital science data, high-definition imagery, and essential information during future Mars missions. It will utilize high-performance telecommunications orbiters around the Red Planet to support upcoming surface, orbital, and human exploration endeavors.
The RFP follows a draft released on April 2 and incorporates insights gained from an industry day held at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. During this event, commercial partners provided valuable feedback on the agency’s objectives for the network. NASA’s request specifically seeks proposals that address both current and future operational missions, alongside a science payload accommodation to be selected by the agency’s Science Mission Directorate. Interested industry partners are required to submit their responses within 30 calendar days of the posting, with the network expected to be operational at Mars no later than 2030.
This initiative is integral to NASA’s evolving space architecture, designed to extend continuous network services from Earth to the Moon and Mars. Forming a key component of NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Program’s Moon to Mars strategy, the network is supported by direction and funding from Congress through the Working Families Tax Cut Act.
