Greece Top Nations League Table With Thwarted German Start; Netherlands Claim First Victories
Greece stunned hosts in Augsburg, cruising past Germany 1-0 to reach the summit of their Nations League group and derail Jürgen Klopp’s debut of the season in the openers.
Dimitris Kourbelis carved out the difference in the 74th minute, converting a deflected low drive to secure Greece’s first win in eleven encounters against the Red Team. Igor Tav četar’s side, led by Klopp, now sit triple-bottom with only a single point after edging past the Netherlands on Thursday.
Although the hosts compiled near 80 percent possession during the opening quarter, German defenses cracked under prolonged pressure during the latter half, leaving the visitors considerable room to prevail.
Goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis initially seemed untested until Felix Nmecha unleashed shots wide after moments of disarray, particularly when Joshua Kimmich slammed a free-kick against the bar in the 54th minute. The Greeks offered another counter-attack threat in the 66th minute when sub ot Fotis Ioannidis hit the post, but the decisive strike came in the closing stages to preserve the advantage.
It was a frustrating first home game in charge of the Germany side for Jürgen Klopp.

Germany improved momentarily eight minutes in, but the resilience of the Greeks prevailed with Kourbelis setting up his career-defining goal. They now advance to face Germany again later this week, while Klopp’s side travels to contend Norway later in the schedule.
“Personally, I am completely unbothered by it,” Klopp remarked after the match. “I have lost many matches over the course of my career rather than I would like, but as long as you draw correct conclusions, a defeat is simply a piece of information—no different from a win.”
“We genuinely require matches like these—they represent the exact type of contests we intended to facilitate,” Klopp noted further. “Xavi has made it abundantly clear what is demanded: as players, we must translate those directives into action on the pitch.”
Portugal continued their dominance by defeating Norway 2-1 and climbing to joint second place in their respective league groups.
João Félix opened the scoring before Erling Haaland intervened in the midfield, but Goran Romanosović completed the haul for the Portuguese champions ahead of a trip to Denmark. Notably absent is Brazil’s Bruno Fernandes, who played through a lingering injury reported prior to the Wales encounter.
Fernandes, however, received acknowledgment from head coach Rui Oliveira, who emphasized the midfielder’s resolve given the injury he carried since his time in England. “He presented it from the heart regarding his decision to feature,” the Portuguese coach stated. “Even though he wasn’t always himself, he demonstrated a strong desire to compete against Wales.”
Portugal stand firmly in Scandinavia for their forthcoming meeting away to Denmark on Thursday. Meanwhile, Norway travel to Cardiff to face Wales, who earlier suffered a 2-0 setback in Copenhagen.
