Large demonstrations occurred throughout Germany, with some turning violent as police deployed water cannons against individuals throwing Molotov cocktails.
On Saturday, several police officers sustained injuries after tens of thousands of participants took part in youth-led protests nationwide, organized by the group “Gen Z regelt” (Gen Z has got this).
The protests, inspired by comparable movements in France and Italy, stayed largely peaceful throughout the day.
However, tensions rose in the evening when groups of young people refused to disperse, and violence was reported in major cities such as Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg.
“Gen Z regelt” reported that approximately 120,000 people participated in the protests, falling short of the roughly 180,000 it had anticipated.
