Nearly 90,000 told to evacuate as wildfire approaches Reno, Nevada

Tens of thousands of people have been told to evacuate an area near Reno, Nevada, as a large wildfire approaches the city’s outskirts.

Approximately 42,000 residents were ordered to leave their homes immediately, with another 45,000 urged to prepare for potential evacuation.

The fire, reported Saturday morning, has so far injured six people. Windy and erratic weather conditions have fueled its rapid spread.

Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County, mobilizing the National Guard to assist firefighting and law enforcement teams.

“This situation is active and evolving quickly. I urge all affected residents to stay alert and adhere to directives from local officials,” he stated.

The blaze, caused by human activity, was first reported at 11:15 AM local time (18:15 GMT) on Saturday.

As of Sunday evening, it had scorched 10,500 acres and remained 0% contained.

About 13,700 homes fall within the evacuation zone, with two shelters established to house displaced individuals.

Of the six injured, three were firefighters battling the flames.
