Netflix Announces Liz Meriwether to Pen Britney Spears Biopic Directed by Jon M. Chu]
Liz Meriwether, creator of New Girl, has been attached to write the screenplay for the upcoming Britney Spears biographical film, directed by Jon M. Chu. The project is based on Spears’ bestselling memoir The Woman In Me, with the singer reportedly involved in the development process.
The Woman In Me achieved significant commercial success upon its October 2023 release, selling over 2.5 million copies in the U.S. and 1 million internationally in its first week. The audiobook, narrated by Michelle Williams with an introduction by Spears, became the fastest-selling title in Simon & Schuster’s history.
The memoir revealed numerous personal details, including Spears’ account of having an abortion during her relationship with Justin Timberlake (1998-2002), as he felt they “weren’t ready to have a baby” due to their young age.
Chu, who confirmed Spears’ active involvement in the film, previously indicated the project remains in early development. “I’m a fan of Britney’s and want to tell her story right,” he said. “She’ll be very involved, though we’re still exploring our approach.”
