Netflix to Stream Lee Chang-Dong’s Film Catalog After ‘Possible Love’ Venice Award

Following the Silver Lion win for Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love at the Venice Film Festival, Netflix has announced plans to expand the global streaming availability of the director’s works.

Lee’s earlier films, Green Fish and Secret Sunshine, are already accessible on Netflix in Italy, the UK, France, Australia, and New Zealand since August. Additionally, Peppermint Candy and Oasis began streaming in Italy and Spain on September 4.

Poetry and Burning are slated for release in additional markets, including Japan, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Availability and timing will vary by country, with subtitles offered in up to six languages, such as Korean.

Possible Love, Lee’s first film in eight years, received the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize in Venice. The film is scheduled to open in South Korean theaters on September 23, with rollouts in Australia and New Zealand on October 22, and in the UK, Japan, the US, and Canada on October 23. The global premiere on Netflix will occur on November 6.

The film has been selected as South Korea’s official entry for the Best International Feature category at the Academy Awards.

Since his debut with Green Fish in 1997, Lee’s films have earned prestigious accolades, including Best Director at the 59th Venice International Film Festival for Oasis in 2002 and Best Screenplay at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival for Poetry in 2010. Most recently, he became the first Korean director to receive the Ebert Director Award at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival.

Starring Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong, Possible Love follows two couples—a laid-off worker and his spouse, and a documentary filmmaker and her spouse—as their paths cross during a film project, leading to a exploration of their contrasting lives and hidden desires.
