The New York Knicks captured their first NBA Championship in over five decades on Saturday night, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the series.
Ending a 53-year wait for a title, the Knicks secured the victory with a 94-90 win, powered by a dominant 45-point performance from guard Jalen Brunson, who outlasted the Spurs and their French star Victor Wembanyama.
The win marked another resilient comeback for New York, as the team overcame a double-digit deficit to seize control of the game. Speaking after the final buzzer, Brunson, who contributed 15 points in the fourth quarter, expressed his disbelief.
“I don’t know what I’m feeling,” Brunson stated. “I’m in awe. Whenever someone counted us out, we found a way to come back and do something about it.”
The triumph triggered massive celebrations throughout New York City, with fans flooding the streets to commemorate the franchise’s first championship since the 1972-73 season. Social media footage captured sprawling street parties across the city’s various boroughs.
U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated the team via a post on Truth Social, praising the team’s postseason run.
“What a year it has been but, even more so, what incredible playoff wins we have all witnessed, especially the last four – Maybe the greatest in the history of basketball,” he wrote. “Also, tonight, a superstar was born. His name is Jalen Brunson.”
