New York Times Executive Shot to Death; Elderly In-Laws Charged

A New York Times executive was fatally shot in California, with authorities alleging that his wife’s elderly parents carried out the killing and have been arrested on murder suspicion.

Jonathan McKinsey, 40, who served as the newspaper’s director of engineering for games player experience, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in a parking lot in Dublin, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) west of San Francisco, on Saturday afternoon, according to police.

Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, the victim’s parents-in-law, both 77 years old, face several charges, including first-degree murder.

It remains uncertain whether the couple have retained legal counsel; they are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday to answer the charges formally.

The New York Times confirmed McKinsey’s death.

His body was discovered at 15:00 (23:00 GMT) on Thursday afternoon outside the Dublin Sports Grounds.

Witnesses speaking to KGO-TV in San Francisco reported hearing a rapid series of gunshots before seeing the victim lying on the ground.

“I saw the man collapse to the floor, his head and chest covered in blood,” said witness Assad Razawi to the news outlet.

His daughter added that her father observed the couple walking together before calmly departing the scene after the shooting.

The couple were taken into custody minutes later by an officer who happened to be passing by; a witness noted they had stayed near the scene after the attack.

Police declared McKinsey dead at the scene.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the killing.

The elderly couple are being detained at Santa Rita Jail and additionally face charges of felony conspiracy, willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, and child endangerment.
