The New York Yankees have signed former top prospect Jarred Kelenic to a minor league contract, providing him with an opportunity to resurge his career.
At 27, Kelenic will report to Triple‑A Scranton/Wilkes‑Barre after opting out of a minor‑league assignment with the Texas Rangers and becoming a free agent.
Originally the sixth overall selection by the New York Mets, Kelenic has appeared in Major League games for the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers.
